You can create your own color variations using a “Classic gray” Sgraffito Grip Base and any earth, mineral oxide or other lime proof natural pigment.

Fine (#30 mesh size)

Approximate coverage 3kg – 10 sq feet depending on surface porosity. Mix with water into wet plaster (up to 1/2 of dry material by volume) and apply directly over ceramic tile, unpainted plaster, natural stone or any primed surface (for example – wooden panel or drywall). I use cabinet grade birch plywood for my panels. Prime with flat latex paint (any kind, I prefer exterior paint). Strong water proof seal is needed – I do not use gesso for that because it contains chalk.

This is a Sgraffito Base Color coat, it is NOT an Intonaco Plaster Coat or Roman Marmorino or Sgraffito Topcoat which are cut and scraped as sgraffito and/or painted in fresco (see What is Sgraffito? and What is Fresco? articles).

Sgraffito Grip and Base Coat comes dry. Mix with water only the amount you can use within 30 min. Can not be stored once wet, so measure well. Mix with water (about 1/2 of dry material by volume) into wet plaster, for better bond first layer should be “on wetter side, almost slurry like”.

3 kg package will cover about 10-12 sq feet depending on surface porosity and application.
1. Apply/Spread quickly using Gager Trowel
2. Flatten with Wooden Fresco Float (refer to BFF V1 Fresco Plaster dvd tutorial)

Note: If applying directly over non-porous surface (primed wooden panel) for “Single Base” application, you can skip step 2.

Yes, you can use any color Sgraffito Grip and Base for both coats of Double Base panel prep.

Isolating Primer:

For Isolating Primer Coat (…more details) use any thick commercial water based paint, preferably exterior (creates softer, flexible paint layer).

Isolating Primer is used to seal wooden (plywood) fresco sgraffito panel prior to application of base plasters (Fresco plasterGrip or Sgraffito Base and Grip, Arriccio Plaster with Fresco Plaster Weld).

To fortify the adhesion of the base plasters, Isolating Primer can be textured. Texturing helps to mitigate possible adhesion inconsistencies caused by the use of random paint.

Textured Isolating Primer (Rough Textured + Fine Textured) is also used to add texture to previously painted or non porous surfaces (drywall, previously painted stucco and plaster walls, etc.)

Rough Textured Isolating Primer Coat, must be followed with Fine Textured Isolating Primer Coat!
