Description
Straw-bale Lime Putty is a “young”, aged under 12 months, calcium slaked lime putty. It is slaked from pure Ca0 using the same method as our other limes. Economy option for use in earthen, cob, clay and adobe plasters used in strawbale construction and other applications.
Straw-bale Lime Putty is sold by volume because it is a “young” lime with somewhat even consistency similar to sour cream.
As lime ages it settles, excess water gets pushed to the top. The longer the aging the denser lime putty becomes and the more water separates out. Hence our mature aged limes are sold by weight not and by volume.
And yes, Straw-bale Lime Putty can be used for limewash as well as for other lime based plasters such as “venetian plaster”.
It can be used for fresco painting, and sgraffito, however it is not recommended for final delicate Intonaco layer, Intonacino or Marmorino Skim unless it is aged for additional 24+ months. For Fresco Painting and Sgraffito, please consider our mature aged slaked limes.
Lime crystals (portlandite) undergo important morphological and dimensional changes during ageing which results in improved plasticity, workability and water retention. The crystals reduce in size but also change shape becoming ‘platelike’ or flat. (Getty Conservation Institute 1998)
